Webcast: Learn About Online Tools Created for Colleges and Universities to Assess How Administrative Holds Impact Students

BOULDER, Colo. – No Holding Back, a yearlong collaboration between 12 public higher ed institutions in the West, has resulted in the development of innovative online tools to help all colleges and universities better understand how the practice and policies of administrative holds can balance student success and institutional financial health.

Please join us for a webcast, hosted in partnership with the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE) and the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO), on Tuesday, October 10, to learn more about the project, tools, and ongoing work. Ascendium Education Group and Lumina Foundation generously supported the No Holding Back project.

This webcast, which is free and open to the public, is especially recommended for administrative leaders, registrars, bursars, enrollment specialists, and directors of information technology and institutional research at post-high school institutions and will include:

  • Examples of why and how holds are used on campus and why to strategically reassess usage.
  • A student’s perspective and experience of holds.
  • A variety of institutional perspectives and possible institutional approaches.
  • Access to a template data collection and analysis framework, “where to start” checklists, tools, and examples.

Administrative holds, often utilized by colleges and universities, serve as a way to elicit necessary action from the student for various reasons, including academic advising, financial obligations, administrative requirements, or disciplinary matters. Interest has increased recently for colleges and universities to re-examine and improve the widely used practice on their campuses.

The No Holding Back community of practice is comprised of 12 selected institutions across the WICHE region. Together, these institutions worked with staff from WICHE and AACRAO for the last year, analyzing their data, policies, and practices to understand better the role and impact of administrative hold policies and practices on their students and institutions.

The participating schools of No Holding Back are diverse and varied; they are situated in rural and urban locations and serve student populations ranging from 1,500 to as many as 40,000 undergraduates each year. The 12 institutions represent 10 states or territories in the West; seven institutions have 30 percent or more Pell recipients; five are minority-serving institutions; and three institutions serve community college students. They are California State University Fullerton, Central Washington University, Eastern Oregon University, Flathead Valley Community College (Montana), Great Basin College (Nevada), Idaho State University, Laramie County Community College (Wyoming), Portland State University (Oregon), University of Alaska Southeast, University of Arizona, University of Guam, and University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
