Colorado is one of the most educated states in the nation, ranking high in the percentage of adults who attended college and hold bachelor's degrees. But state funding for higher education isn't what it used to be -- according to the American Council on Education, state support shrank nearly 70 percent between 1980 and 2011. The same study says funding could dry up completely by 2019; so perhaps it's no coincidence that the revenue public colleges and universities here get from tuition has increased every year since 2007.
Student and Graduate Testimonials
Here's what students and graduates are saying about WICHE's Student Exchange Programs
"I was seeking an online education because of my current responsibilities, and Western New Mexico University (WNMU) was the only accredited college with an online program that participated in WUE. Out-of-state tuition is extremely high, so needless to say, without WUE I wouldn't have been able to continue my college education. Thank you for creating such a wonderful program."
— Araceli, California resident, Class of 2017, Western New Mexico University, Bachelor's of Social Work
"When I was accepted into the University of Northern Colorado's program, I knew it was the perfect fit. UNC's theatre program is incredible, and being offered a place in the acting program was a dream come true. However, I was unable to afford out-of-state tuition, especially for a degree program in a career field that is difficult to penetrate. WUE has allowed me to pursue my dream career and be a part of an exceptional program. I will be graduating with very little debt thanks to WUE, and I could not be more thankful."
— Yasmine, Arizona resident, Class of 2017, University of Northern Colorado, Theatre Arts, Acting
"WUE allowed me to study at Arizona State University in Downtown Phoenix. Without it, I wouldn't have been able to afford tuition."
— Ruben, Arizona resident, Class of 2016, Arizona State University, Downtown Phoenix Campus, Nonprofit Leadership and Management
"I would not have been able to go to graduate school and get the specialized training that I needed without WUE. It is truly a wonderful program. Thank you!"
— JCB, Oregon resident, Class of 2016, Western Oregon University, Mental Health Counseling for the Deaf
"WUE has allowed me to attain a world-class education here in Alaska, at an affordable rate. Thanks to WUE, I'm able to pursue my dream of becoming a engineer and I look forward to a profitable professional career."
— Lenin, California resident, Class of 2019, University of Alaska, Fairbanks, Petroleum Engineering
"WUE has made attending my first choice college possible. All majors are WUE-eligible at Eastern Washington University, which means many more students can benefit from the program. Thanks to WUE, the cost of attending EWU is very comparable to enrolling at a California public institution. And, I can still enjoy the experience of attending college out-of-state."
— Kalani, California resident, Class of 2019, Eastern Washington University, Early Childhood Education with Special Education minor
"WUE has helped me achieve academic success by giving me the opportunity to attend school outside of my state and explore the world around me. I have been able to take the classes I need to stay on track to graduate at a reasonable cost. I am doing well in all my classes and am so grateful for the opportunity WUE gave me."
— Anna, California resident, Class of 2018, Idaho State University, Radiology Technology
"WUE has made paying for school easier. I am pursuing my degree in anthropology which is something I have wanted to do for my whole life!"
— Rose, Nevada resident, Class of 2018, Idaho State University, Anthropology
"WUE is the only way I am able to attend ISU which as one of the best bachelor’s program for dental hygiene on the West, which will allow me to be competitive in the job market once I graduate. A college education is essential to getting a good job and having a successful career, and WUE has allowed me to attain that education. Thank you!"
— Renae, California resident, Class of 2018, Idaho State University, Dental Hygiene
"I am so grateful to be paying reduced tuition thanks to the WUE program. It has made it possible for me to attend an out-of-state university that offered my major: a bachelor’s in dental hygiene. Not only has WUE made school affordable, but it’s also challenged me to work for my goals in a set time frame. I would not be where I am today without the financial help from WUE."
— Megan, Arizona resident, Class of 2017, Idaho State University, Dental Hygiene
"I am eternally grateful for WUE. It’s helped me attend a great institution with an excellent anthropology program. Without it, I would not have been able to afford my studies at Idaho State University and would have had to post-pone the completion of my degree. After I graduate, I plan to continue my work with museums and teach children about various topics in a museum setting and pursue graduate studies."
— Randi, Utah resident, Class of 2015, Idaho State University, Anthropology
"Before I heard about WUE, I was a full-time waitress working hard to survive in Irvine, California. I’d already given up my dreams of becoming an engineer. I would never have been able to attend or afford college if it weren’t for WUE. And studying at NMSU has opened up tremendous opportunities for me. I am serving on the elected body of the university’s student government as a representative of the College of Engineering. I also got to meet and interview with many of the alumni that are now working at major companies like Chevron, Exxon Mobil, Raytheon, and more. Within just my first year here, I have already built a large network that will help pave the way to my future success."
— Diane, California resident, Class of 2018, New Mexico State University, Chemical Engineering
"When I decided to pursue a career in audiology, I knew I was going to have to go out of state for school as there are no programs in Alaska. Even though I had no doubts that this was the right choice for me, I was not sure how the financial aspects would work out. It wasn't until I received notice about WUE that I knew I was going to be able to make it through school financially. WUE has been a huge blessing to me, and I am extremely grateful for this opportunity. WUE is giving me the chance to get the education I need so that someday I can return home and provide medical services to the people in my home state. Thank you so very much!"
— Caitie M., Alaska resident, Class of 2018, Idaho State University, Audiology
"Everyone can relate to the fact that college is extremely expensive, especially if you're paying out-of-state tuition. I have always wanted to attend a college out of my hometown and WUE has made paying for college easier. Thanks for this amazing opportunity to study at CSU East Bay. WUE is awesome!"
— Vivian, Oregon resident, Class of 2016, California State University, East Bay, Sociology
"When I began looking at colleges, it was obvious that financially, the smart choice would be to attend an in-state university. I applied for and was accepted to an institution in my home state. I was born and raised in Alaska, and I intend to return to my home state upon graduation to pursue my career in nursing. However, having never lived outside, I had never experienced some of the simple things that so many take for granted (marching bands, football games, pep rallies, concerts, and even road trips). Upon applying to Idaho State University and being granted the WUE discount, I suddenly had a choice that was not based on finances, but rather on where I wanted to be. I chose to attend ISU, and it was a fantastic decision. I absolutely love the school, the location, and the ability to have the life experiences that I desire, knowing that I am exactly where I should be. Enrolling at ISU would not have been possible without WUE, and I am forever grateful. "
— Alyson, Alaska resident, Class of 2018, Idaho State University, Nursing
