Apfeldorf, M.D., Ph.D.

Department of Psychiatry
Dr. William Apfeldorf is currently
Associate Professor of Psychiatry, University of New Mexico School
of Medicine and Health Sciences Center. He is the Director of
Geropsychiatry Programs, coordinating the clinical, educational,
and research efforts at the University of New Mexico geared to
meeting the mental health needs of seniors. He is also the Medical
Director for Inpatient Services at the University of New Mexico
Psychiatry Center, and is the attending geriatric psychiatrist
for its unit for seniors. He serves as consultant psychiatrist
for the Manzano del Sol nursing home.
Currently he is a co-investigator on
a Reynolds Foundation grant to the University of New Mexico to increase
its educational efforts about seniors, geronotology, and geriatric
medicine. He is also a member of the UNM Geriatric Education Center,
focusing on the needs of Native American elders in the Southwest.
He has previously received National Institutes of Mental Health
funding to study anxiety in the elderly. He is also on the speakers
bureau for several drug companies, including Pfizer, Astra-Zeneca,
Jannsen, Eli Lilly, and Forrest.
Dr. Apfeldorf went to Yale University for both undergraduate and
graduate degrees. He was awarded both MD and PhD in Cell Biology
degrees in 1987. He completed his psychiatric residency at the New
York State Psychiatric Institute and his geriatric psychiatary training
at New York Hospital/ Cornell University. He was a member of the
Cornell School of Medicine faculty for 12 years before joining the
faculty at the University of New Mexico.
