The clients of WICHE ICE are committed to finding more cost-effective and efficient ways to address the needs of their students. With today’s limited resources, many find that expanding access to niche programs and developing new courses and programs addressing emerging fields or special needs are simply beyond their individual means. By joining forces with other clients who share common interests and needs, they can build more extensive and robust learning opportunities for the combined student population.
Regardless of the scope, WICHE ICE provides the flexible infrastructure to support a wide range of collaborative models based on the intent of the group. Through these collaborative efforts, faculty members at multiple institutions have the opportunity to work together with colleagues in their disciplines to develop a richer learning experience for all of their students. This is especially helpful for small departments without the staff to develop full programs or add a concentration in niche subjects where expertise is very limited. New members may join our existing initiatives or suggest new ones for consideration.
- One institution may provide all of the core courses and award the credential while its partner institutions supply electives and help market the program to students at their institutions. The courses are exchanged through WICHE ICE.
- Multiple institutions may develop new courses in a particular field, each taking on those where they have the most faculty expertise. This effort might lead to a joint certificate or simply provide courses addressing a particular need such as teacher education. Regardless, the members involved in the initiative will share seats through WICHE ICE. Using this model, the institutions can aggregate the number of students to make it financially viable to offer these courses—something out of reach for a single institution which would leave this important need unaddressed.
- Faculty members with similar or complimentary expertise from multiple institutions may work together to develop one very robust course. One of our consortium client institutions may host it on an ongoing basis or the course may move from one institution to another. Regardless, it may be listed by all participating institutions in their catalog and seats shared among those involved in the collaborative effort through WICHE ICE and with other ICE members as capacity allows.
